Geeky News Round-Up: 2015 July 25

Every weekend, the GeeksPH Team will post what’s up, what’s interesting and what’s coming in the geek world—may it be anime, science, comics, movies, fandom, books, or what-have-you. Here are a few news items of the week that have caught our attention:

  • Groundbreaking photos of Pluto made waves last week thanks to NASA’s New Horizons space probe. Here are the scientists that made it all possible.
  • PEOPLE. If you have always wanted to ask Stephen Hawking a question (or get sassed by him), now’s your chance. Hawking is participating in a Reddit AMA for the first time and it will span at least a few weeks, starting July 27. Hawking is particularly keen on discussing artificial intelligence.
  • Nagasaki’s Henn na Hotel (or Weird Hotel) recently opened its doors to the public. The weirdness starts at the reception area, where you are greeted by a dinosaur. The hotel is manned by its mostly robot staff.
  • It’s a go for the Jurassic World sequel, set to be released in the US on June 22, 2018. The fifth movie of the franchise will again star Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.
  • Local bookworms are in for a treat with the month-long Books for Less Warehouse Sale in Pasig City starting next Saturday. So, make sure to clear your schedule, wear comfy shoes and don’t forget to hydrate.
  • Twenty-four years after his death, a new (old) unpublished children’s story by Dr. Seuss creator Theodor Seuss Geisel was discovered among his doodles and abandoned sketches donated to the University of California.
  • Take a look at the impressive 1/6 scale Millennium Falcon on display at this weekend’s Ani-Com and Games Hong Kong 2015. It is massive!
  • And since we mentioned Hong Kong, maybe you’d like to stay longer to catch Gundam Docks II? Big fans of Gundam will have the entire month of August to marvel at the 1/3 scale models of Gundam Unicorn and that awesome Wing Gundam Zero that will be suspended from the ceiling.
  • Like zombies? Like ’90s boy bands? How about those two together? Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter is writing and directing a zombie movie which will star fellow BSB member AJ McLean and NSync’s Joey Fatone.
  • George R.R. Martin took time off from…hopefully writing The Winds of Winter to fanboy over Ant-Man. He was, as his current mood icon indicates, satisfied.
  • Speaking of GRRM, rumors that Jon Snow lives(!) persist as Kit Harrington is spotted in Belfast with his Game of Thrones costars, still sporting unmistakably Jon Snow-y hair.
  • Here are some high-resolution X-Men: Apocalypse photos for your zooming-in pleasure.
  • Kawaii as a force for good: Anti-Isis anime fans and artists are flooding the Internet with images of adorable characters (Isis-chan and Isil-kun) with the intent of Google bombing searches for the word “Isis” with images of extreme cuteness instead of extreme violence typically associated with the terrorist group.
