Part 2/2: WonFes 2016 (Warning: Picture heavy post)

Very heavy post ahead~. (Part 2 of 2)

Check out Part 1 here – A brief narration of my morning experience in WonFes + tons of pictures.

Pokemon Center Sapporo – An Unexpected Visit

My wife and I chanced upon a Pokemon Center across the Sapporo train station while we were hunting for winter boots. It is located in the 8F ESTA building near the video arcades. When she went to go shoe shopping, I decided to follow the trainer in me!

As soon as you come out of the elevator you will be greeted by a big display of Piplup, Pikachu and Fennekin. On the base are familiar signatures.

We have been Pokemon Trainers since Blue (me) and Ruby (her).

Masuda-san is one of the founding members of Game Freak and produces/directs some of the games.
This signature was beside Masuda-san’s but I can’t read Japanese. If you can read it please post in the comment section.

Everywhere you look is eye candy for any fan. Lots of pics below!

Even the elevators are nicely decorated!

I would like to try the games but they are in Japanese.

Apart from Pikachu, it seems that the other 3 original basic starters are popular as well. They also highlight some of the other basics which were released in the later games.

Some announcements. Wait… is that Nendoroid?

I was surprised to see this ad. Apart from the reissue of Red in Championship edition to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the game, I didn’t know that they will also release both Ash and Gary. The poster says that it will be opened for preorder for about a month starting Feb. 27th and will be released in July. It seems you can only order it in Japan though.

These will be good additions to Red, N and Cyntia. Now to find a way to buy…

Red Championship edition is like a reissue of the rare Nendoroid which costs tons of $$$ in secondary market. It is essentially the same figure as the previous, but with completely evolved versions of its Pokemon (the previously released contains basic versions).

There were a few capsule machines available but what caught my attention were the ones with Pikachu cosplaying as other Pokemons. Like other “gashapon”, what you get is random. I tried my luck and managed to get 5 of the 7. Will post pictures of them by the end of this post.

Got some multiples but was never able to catch the white ones. If you have them hit me up for trade in the comments~

Plushies galore!

How many Pikachus are in this picture?

The first thought in my head when I took this picture was “Hey couldn’t that tummy in the upper right be…”

…SNORLAX’!

These are the cosplaying Pikachus. You can actually see them all over, from Akihabara etc.

Pokemon Little Tales

Oooh a sleeping Ditto! Time to breed some Pokemon!

Some other cool merchandise are available as well.

Pimp your DS

Pokebags?

As promised here is a parting shot of the gashapon Pikachus together with a Moncolle Pikachu sporting a trainer hat.

Part 1/2: WonFes 2016 (Warning: Picture heavy post)

Final update. Apologies for the super heavy post.

This is Part 1 of 2. Check out Part 2 here.

=============

As soon as the people alight from the train station, they dashed towards the hall.

It takes around 10mins to walk towards the  halls. There were guides with placards leading the traffic. We were greeted by this sign near the entrance.

To be able to enter, participants need to purchase the guide book. There was advanced  selling last January and it was all sold out. It’s good to know that there are still a lot for those who didn’t get it.

This us how the guidebook looks like. Inside is a map of the booths + guidelines, but mostly in nihonggo.

After getting the guidebook, people were asked to fall in line. This was how it looked around 8:20AM (hall opens at 10AM).

These guys are veterans. Lol.
The line moves a bit every around 15mins. This was how it looked like at 9AM, Front and back.

Was able to come in at around 10:10AM. I went straight to the GSC booth to purchase the Hatsune Miku-Snow Owl version Nendoroid.

Attendees raising their guidebooks so marshalls can check before they are allowed to enter.
The event occupies all the halls so you would have to know beforehand where you should be going. The Nendoroids and Figmas are in Hall 1 so I turned right.

Entrance to the hall.
I sprinted to the end of the hall where GSC is located and was welcomed by the long lines.

Maximum of 2 per person for the exclusives.

I was so close to being unable to buy. Apparently they only accept cash and I only brought a limited amount with me.

After buying the Nendoroids, I fell in line again for more GSC products (the exclusives are separated from the other products).

A snapshot of the GSC stage where they hold various programs. Just finished a while ago was an interview about the new upcoming releases- too bad I was far from the stage because of the line so I wasn’t able to catch it (plus pictures and recordings are not allowed + language barrier).

Afternoon updates===========

Miku’s Snow Owl version of Nendoroid and Figma were SOLD OUT before noon.

My iPhone was about to run out of battery so I decided to just take as many pictures as I could. Asia Pop Comicon Day Zero Sneak Peek

Asia Pop Comicon, the new pop culture convention about to make its mark in the Philippines, opened its doors yesterday, September 17, specifically for people who registered for a free Pro Pass. We were fortunate enough to get Pro Passes, which meant we got to see what the fuss was all about before the big event.

The first thing that greets you once you step through the event hall doors is Marvel’s massive LED display flanked by life-sized statues of Captain America, Iron Man, and Ultron from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Nice!

_DSC0498It looks like the day was set aside to give the media, bloggers, and a few working professionals like us a first look at their setup before the big day(s), but there wasn’t much to see or do since the event doesn’t happen until Friday. Most of the booths are already set up, with a few exhibitors putting the final touches to their displays.

Being the ginormous geeks that we are, we hovered around the general area of the Hot Toys‘ booth as they unboxed their 1:6th scale figures for display, grinning like giant schoolchildren that saw their favorite toys through the shop window.

Singapore-based Comicave Studios is also in the building, bringing with them their impressive collection of die-cast figures based on the successful Iron Man 3 and Age of Ultron movies.

But the one thing we’re quite sure people will be lining up for is their life-sized Hulkbuster statue. Life-sized. Hulkbuster. With the cockpit opened up so you can take a pic of yourself piloting it. Madness!

The Guest Area booths are also up, ready to be filled with fans wanting autographs of their favorite comic book artists, writers, and cosplayers. And getting autographs from them is free. Now we know where we’ll be spending a good chunk of our time in!

With the caliber of talent and branding that will be converging this weekend at the World Trade Center Manila, we can’t help but feel positively stoked for APCC 2015, and we can’t wait to experience another geeky fun weekend.

The hype is strong with this one!

‘Agent Carter’ star Chad Michael Murray and Pro-Wrestler Bill Goldberg to Fly to Manila for AsiaPOP Comicon 2015

More celebrities have just been announced to attend the Asia Pop Comicon happening on September 19-20. Despite the backing out of Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Khal Drogo) due to prior commitments, it was recently confirmed that Paul Bettany (voice of Jarvis, and later portrayed Vision in the Avengers: Age of Ultron movie) had agreed to attend. Also present will be Arrow’s Colton Haynes and Game of Thrones’ Bettany Hayes.

Now a cast member of Agent Carter and a pro-wrestler are added to the mix, making the event a more exciting time for geeks. Check it out below.

Sideshow’s 1:6 Raynor, great but not perfect.

Starcraft’s Terran hero, James Raynor, was made into a 1:6 scale figurine by the folks from Sideshow. Normally 1:6 figures stand at around 12 inches high but since he’s in his Terran Space Marine Combat Power Suit, he stands 16″ tall.

This thing was on my preorder list the day it was announced about a little over a year and a half ago. It came out in the US early 2015 but was just released in the Ph around a few months ago. I rarely get 1:6 figures although since everybody else seems to be on the Iron Man bandwagon, I took this one just to be a bit unique.

I’ve seen previews and reviews of this thing but when I finally received it, I felt a bit short-changed after paying almost 500USD for it. Granted that this 1:6 figure is extremely detailed, from the rubber hoses and segmented pieces to the small decals. But at this price point, I would have expected more.

The hulking Combat Power Suit, as daunting as it looks, is light for his size. Also he’s top heavy, even with those massive feet it’s very hard to get him to balance properly. And because of that, it’s difficult to get him into action poses that you’d normally like to do with 1:6 figures.

I also found the hoses on the arms especially the elbow areas a bit disappointing. You’d expect to have those hoses locked down, but it’s stated in the manual that if it becomes loose, just tuck it back in.

As with many other figures, the accessories are very much detailed. Both the Assault Rifle and the Sniper Rifle have detachable magazines. The revolver could have been better. Maybe a more metallic finish to emphasize the details but I doubt you’ll be removing this from its holster anyways.

I tried making him hold his Assault rifle but since the hands were fully articulated and a bit on the loose side, it’s hard to lock a grip on the gun. Even harder to make it do a firing position and this is just the only way to make him hold it.

So sometimes I end up making him hold his gun over his shoulder. Just to avoid knocking him and his gun over.

I still haven’t figured out how he can properly hold the sniper rifle, but it looks better on the table with the bipod supporting it.

You’ll notice that I have a Hot Toys Dynamic Figure Stand on the side, to help keep him upright. I had an incident where it fell face flat on my table at one point in time and even lodged off a piece of armor from his pinky finger and while in the process of putting that armor on again, this happened:

I was able to put it all back together but this just added to my slight displeasure with the overall quality of the product.

Nevertheless, beyond all those issues I encountered, Raynor is still a wonderful piece especially if you’re a StarCraft fan. Is it worth the 500USD price tag? Probably not. But compared to the legion of 1:6 Iron Man armors out there that’s basically a rehash of the same mold, I think this fares better for any collection.

Best Geeky Fandom Drones for the Discerning Fan

Everyone loves drones. While adorable little flying spy cameras for now, in several years’ time Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking both guarantee that they shall revolt, take over as the master race, and become our evil killer robot overlords, so let’s enjoy them while they last.

And while we wait, let’s take the time to appreciate the time and immense effort it must have taken for drone aficionados to come up with these fandom-based custom-built drones!

Star Trek: The USS Enterprise

The USS Enterprise is THE most prominent starship in pop culture. So it’s no surprise that a couple of people have tried building drone replicas:

Want your Enterprise to light up the night sky? Someone’s done that, too.

Star Wars: Millenium Falcon

Not to be outdone, friendly rivals Star Wars fans have also come up with their own version of the Millenium Falcon.

Back to the Future: Delorean

Great Scott! This great-looking custom built Delorean looks like it could really have come from the future!

DC: Batwing

As one of the world’s mightiest superheroes, Batman definitely deserves a drone.

A Superman plane has already made recent rounds, GoPro-style, so maybe Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet might be flying around even as we speak.

Marvel: S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier

Marvel superheroes aren’t as known for their rides as much as their DC Counterparts, but this S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier is still awesome as a custom-built drone. Bonus: it can float on water, just like its comics / movie counterpart!

Avatar: C-21 Dragon Gunship

Easily one of the harder drones to work out. Movement and turning seems to be possible only by expert maneuvering of the propellers, and the hefty design is not the easiest structure to control while up in the air.

Geeky News Round-up: 2015 August 23

Every weekend, the GeeksPH Team will post what’s up, what’s interesting and what’s coming in the geek world—may it be anime, science, comics, movies, fandom, books, or what-have-you. Here are a few news items of the week that have caught our attention.

  • Lots of amusement park news this past week! First off, the recent D23 Expo revealed more concrete plans for new additions to some of the Disney properties in the US, particularly Star Wars, Marvel (at least the characters that don’t overlap with Universal’s), and surprisingly, James Cameron’s Avatar. Jedis and superhero fans just can’t wait! Ok, and maybe fans of those weird blue people that aren’t smurfs.
  • A Rebel Force Radio listener named Kevin Lynch took the Star Wars theme park news and made this mind-blowing concept art. WHY IS THIS NOT REAL YET?!

    11878975_957948677581867_4457775577454434520_o
Yes, I am posting this pic here because it is just AH-MAYZING and I am so down for that… despite the threat of being force-choked by potential Sith. But theme parks are supposed to be all about that heart-stopping thrill anyway, right? Source: Rebel Force Radio
  • It’s too bad that park doesn’t exist. We could’ve flown there on ANA’s Star Wars-themed planes.
  • For something closer to home, Hong Kong Disneyland is set to have the Iron Man Experience next year!
  • But if you’re jaded by society and the capitalist construct of the entertainment industry, maybe Banksy’s Dismaland is more your thrill. Located in the UK, the controversial painter’s collaborative exhibit with other artists is a darkly insightful, gloomily pensive, and overly pessimistic reflection of what’s happening in the world today. Unfortunately, it takes more than the 3pound ticket price to get there for us, so we’ll have to be contented with these photos and with this footage from Channel 4.
  • Now that Banksy has put us in a suitably depressed mood: Batgirl is dead. The 1960s guest star of Batman the TV series, Yvonne Craig, passed away August 19.
  • From death to life, or rather, the fountain of youth as old news about Google’s investments in the life sciences have resurfaced after its restructure to Alphabet. Besides research on anti-aging, they’re also working on cancer detection, multiple sclerosis deceleration, and blood glucose monitoring. We applaud you for this, Google.
  •  Do you guys remember when the fellowship of the LotR movie got matching tattoos? Well, the cast of Suicide Squad took it one step further. Not only did they get matching tattoos, they gave it to each other.
  • Adobe Flash, you used to be cool. But now even Amazon is rejecting you.
  • Users of WhatsApp will be happy to know that the desktop integration, WhatsApp Web, has just been made available on the iPhone.
  • Presently leaking in Tech news: Uber is about to go public. And when I say “go public”, I mean the finance thing, not anything scandalous.
  • Also leaking on the internet: the Avengers: Age of Ultron gag reel. Watch it before they start pulling it from the web, quick! Otherwise, you’d have to wait until the DVD/Blu-ray comes out before enjoying the sight of juicy fan service-y bits like a Thor x Vision embrace, and a Tony x Steve almost-kiss.
